A tree is always the sign of life and fertility even in other cultures. Especially, the evergreen tree is considered a remedy against demons and means life endurance. Christianity adopted the current tree symbols and combined them with the Tree of Life of the Old Testament (Genesis 2:9).

In 1419, the first decorated Christmas tree was standing in a guild room in Freiburg/Breisgau. It was a “sugar tree,” decorated with fruits, wafers, nuts, and gingerbread. In both Protestant and Catholic areas, the existence of Christmas trees has been mentioned since the 16th Century.
